I have been MIA from the blog for what feels like a really long time! We had one crazy busy week before we left for Mexico trying to wrap things up with my class, packing, trying to find someone to house sit.

We also had to put our dog down. Jack was 11 years old and had a great life, but it was so hard to lose him. I was devastated, which led to me having no desire to blog, or really do much besides be sad in my free time.

We got him when I was in grade 9. Jack was my most favorite running partner ever. When I first started running I used to have to literally drag him down the driveway to come with me. I was too scared to run in the bushes on my own or else I probably would have just left him at home.

Eventually we both grew to love running, and he was always ready to head out for a quick run. I remember one Christmas we went out for a run and as we were going down an icy hill I slipped and fell. Jack decided the best way to help was to come and sit on my stomach. As you can see in the photos, he was not a small boy, but I couldn't stop laughing long enough to push him off of me. It was pretty funny.

He had an amazing life, and we were so lucky to have him. Its going to be weird when we get home from our vacation and he's not there to greet us with a stick or a ball or a bone. He was hurting pretty bad at the end though, so it was time. RIP Jacky Lou.

Running Streak Week 1 Recap

Yay, the weekend is finally here!!

I feel like I barely had time to breathe this week! We had our school Christmas concert this week ,and getting a busy group of grade 1/2's ready  for it was a challenge. They did an amazing job though, they're just so dang cute! We did lots of neat little Christmas crafts this week too, I'm going to try to remember to take some pictures to post next week!

I've been teaching the same grade 1/2 class for 7 weeks now, and I can't believe I only have a week left with them! I'm sad, but at the same time I'm ready for a break! I've been counting down the days until we head to Mexico- one more week!!

Week 1 of my 50 day running streak went well, there were definitely a few nights that I really didn't want to drag my butt onto the treadmill, but I did it and like always I felt better afterwards. Since I was totally time crunched this week, all of my runs happened on the treadmill. I am looking forward to getting outside for a nice snowy run with my Baxter boy tomorrow morning!

I am proud of myself for making it through one week, usually I get a few days into something like this and get lazy, but not this time. I'm looking forward to completing the remaining 43 days!

My goal for next week: At least 2 runs over 30 mins. I need to start building up my mileage again!

Three Things Thursday

Today's Three Things Thursday is all about why I love shopping in the states!!

1. Target.

Do I really need to say more? Most of my favorite clothes (that aren't from Lululemon) are from Target. Everything is so cheap and cute!! We went down on the weekend and I got some super cute sports bras, 2 tee shirts and a cardigan for less than$50! I know we are getting Target stores in Canada, but I have a feeling they aren't going to be as cheap or awesome as the US Target stores.

2. The different types of food.

I could spend hours at the grocery stores looking at all of the different foods that we don't have. Trader Joe's is included in this category obviously. I spend way too much money at TJ's when we go down to Spokane. During our last trip to Kalispell we got holiday colored Junior Mints! The insides were red and green- I was wayy to excited about that! We also got holiday colored Swedish Fish ( I may have had to throw them in the cart when Will wasn't looking!)  The other things we stock up on (besides candy) are yogurt and cheese. They have so many more flavors of yogurt than we do!

3. Friends!

Some of our best friends live in Spokane, so it's nice to get away for a weekend to go and see them. They always take us out for great food, and find us cool local activities to do!

Christmas Awesome Stuff Survey

So if you follow my blog, you know by now that I'm a little bit obsessed with Christmas. Which is why when I saw this excellent Christmas survey on Janae's blog, The Hungry Runner Girl (which is my most favorite blog to read by the way), I just had to join in on the fun. If you've never read Janae's blog before, head over and check it out now... or as soon as you're done reading this post!

1.  Favorite Christmas Album/CD/Song?

Brad Paisley's Christmas album is my absolute fave, followed closely by the Glee Christmas CD.

2.  Run on Christmas morning or take the day off?

Definitely run! I can't wait to run in Mexico on Christmas this year (It'll be weird not to have to  trek through the snow!)

3.  What do you usually eat on Christmas morning?

Sounds super strange, but we have my mom's Swedish pancakes with a side of chips and dip. Only on Christmas morning!

4.  Favorite holiday or Christmas tradition?

 I have so many, it's hard to pick just one..  I always look forward to watching the IIHF World Junior Tournament that starts on Boxing Day with my family each year. We get really into it, even Will who doesn't really like hockey will sit down and watch the games with me (Go Canada!!)

5.  Real tree, fake tree or no tree?

Real for sure!! Going out to cut down a tree is one of my favorite Christmas Activities! We usually have a bonfire, and go sledding if there is enough snow.

6.  Christmas pajamas… yay or nay?

Most definitely!

7.  Where do you spend the holidays?  Your own house, your parents’ house, extended family, in-laws, friends?

We spend part of the day with my family and part with Will's family. That's the beauty of having parents living in the same town!!

8.  Food that you always have during the holiday season?  Favorite Christmas food/treat?

 My mom goes on a baking spree at Christmas each year, I'd have to say my faves are coconut macaroons, and nuts and bolts. I also love sugar cookies!!

9. Open presents all at once or take turns?  Stockings… yes or no?

My stocking is my favorite part of Christmas morning! When we were little we opened our presents all at once, but the last few years we have been taking turns.

10.  Favorite Christmas(ish) movie?

I think I answered this on in the last Christmas Survey I did, but I would have to say Elf, Rudolph, and the cartoon version on The Grinch! I just bought Polar Express today, I've never seen it so I'm excited to watch it!!

Rudolph will always be my very favorite!!

50 day running streak and HBBC week 3 summary

I was reading a story yesterday about a guy who decided to run everyday for 50 days to get his "running mojo" back. I thought that might be a cool idea for a New Years resolution, but then I thought what the heck? Why not start today?

So I did.

The only rules are:

1. At least 20 mins per day
2. 50 days in a row

Yesterday was day one, I have a head cold right now so I decided to do 20 mins of intervals- 1 min at 6.0 and 1 min at 7.0. I did my 20 mins and didn't feel super tired yet so I kept going. I ended up doing 3 miles in 27:30, and jogging for another .25 miles to cool down. It felt good to work up a sweat!

This morning I got up early to get a quick run in before Will and I headed off to the states. I got in 3 mi again, this time in exactly 27:00, my fastest time ever for 3mi! I did a .25 mi cool down again.

2 days down, 48 to go!

As for my HBBC week- It was pretty pathetic. I got my 7 servings of fruits and veggies in everyday, but my exercise was almost non existent! I have plan for next week though, and I'm pretty sure my running streak will help me to stay on top of it!!

Favorite things Christmas swap

Lindsay from A Running Tale, and Leigh from All You Need Is Love put on a Christmas blog swap for Canadian bloggers. Since Christmas and anything related to Christmas is my favorite, I was in!

I was paired with Nicole from Haute Runner. Nicole is a runner, and a mom to the cutest little girl, Audrey! We discovered that we both did the same triathlon a few years ago- small world!

I was so excited to receive my package!

Nicole sent me Christmas cupcake wrappers, a sparkly red star ornament, an awesome Christmas tree shaped flipper, hot chocolate, Baileys and a bag of home baked Christmas goodies!

It was the most excellent package!! The hot chocolate, Baileys and cookies were demolished the night they were received. Thanks so much for the package Nicole, it was awesome! I'm already looking forward to next year's swap!

HBBC Week 2 Summary and Christmas tree hunt!

Another week down!

I feel like this week of the HBBC went much smoother for me. I am getting into the routine of teaching, and I'm not as tired at night which leads to more gym trips!
I got in 3 spin classes, did a couple days of the shred and got a few miles walked. The fruits and veggies are getting easier to get in, thanks to my new addition to breakfast:
1 1/2 C fruit, 1/2 c 100% fruit juice, 1/3 cucumber, 1 handful spinach
So dang delicious!! I have been having this along with 2 scrambled eggs and it keeps me full for a looong time!

Alos during the middle of the week I found out that I won one of the week one prizes, a box of Vega Protien bars, and a Bag of Vega Saviseed! I was really excited, I never seem to win anything! I've never heard of the Saviseed before, anyone else out there heard of it/ used it?

Before I tally my points for the week, I will leave you with a few photos from my Christmas tree getting adventure today. Wore my garmin, we ended up walking 5km!

Three Things Thursday

Hi all!

I was reading Leigh's blog (All You Need Is Love), and she posted some awesome categories for Three Things Thursday, so I decided to borrow them for this week! Thanks Leigh!

Three things I love about winter:
  1. The smell of our woodstove- it just feels like winter
  2. Snow!!
  3. Pulling our couch on skis behind our truck (Can you say redneck? I know you're jealous!)

Three of the best Christmas presents I have ever got:
  1. My mom got me a gorgeous amethyst ring last year, that was pretty awesome!
  2. A doll that came with a brush thing that put jewels in it's hair when you combed it
  3. Anything Playmobil related. I loved that stuff!
Three of the best memories about Christmas:
  1. Getting up ridiculously early with my brother and sister on Christmas morning, going to peak at the tree and get one present to take back to whichever room we were sleeping in and open!
  2. Setting traps to try to catch Santa on Christmas eve
  3. Going out to find a Christmas tree with my family. We always made a day out of it with sledding, hotdog roasts ect.

Three Things Thursday

Welcome to week 2 of Three Things Thursday, your favorite day of the week when I tell you three completely random facts about myself. The theme of this weeks post? Christmas!

1. Christmas is my most favorite holiday ever! I force Will to start tree hunting with me in early November. One time we got pulled over by a Conservation officer who was sure that we were hunting without licenses. He just wouldn't believe that anyone would be out looking for a tree already.

 2. I have a thing for ugly Christmas sweaters. So much in fact that I made one for everyone in my family a couple of years ago. I can't find the picture of us all wearing them, but I do have a few from a party I had where I lent them out...

 3. When I was in teacher school, we had to put on a musical Christmas production for our class. My group decided to do "Up on the Housetop", and since I don't have a coordinated bone in my body, I was given the role of dancing tree. I think I rocked it, until I almost knocked the power box for my lights over!!
I did sway side to side, I promise I didn't just stand there!!

 So there you have it, my Three Things Thursday, Christmas edition... I feel a part two coming on, I could talk about Christmas forever!!

Santa Shuffle 2012

Happy Monday!

Hubby and I have been talking about taking a weekend getaway to Calgary for some time, and I think I found the perfect weekend- The first weekend of December so we can do the Santa Shuffle 5K! Will has never done a race before, so I think it would be super fun one to do!

Last year my Mom, Grandma, Aunt, friend Adele and I ran The Great Santa Race in Las Vegas. It was fun, but so so cold. It was cool to be a part of that race, enough people ran it that they set the Guinness world record for the most people running a 5k dressed as Santa Claus. I wish I had a photo of the crows- it was unreal!! I do have photos of us dressed up though...

I'm really looking forward to doing Will's 1st 5K with him (fingers crossed that he has that weekend off from work!!) and hopefully a new 5K PR?? That would be exciting :)

Lazy Sunday

Today has been amazing, I love lazy Sunday afternoons!

I have been trying to convince Will that Baxter really needs a new puppy best friend... so far it's not working. One day I will win and Baxter will have a new baby sister.

For the rest of the day we have been sitting on the couch watching season 5 of The Office for the 8 millionth time. I just can't get enough. Any other Office fans out there? One of my favorite episodes is the one where Dwight describes his perfect crime.

Three Things Thursday

I've decided to start a weekly post called Three Things Thursday. Each Thursday I will post three random things about myself. Don't pretend you aren't excited to learn more about me!!

1. My tallest friend git married this summer and I was lucky enough to get to be a bridesmaid! She just got her pictures back so I thought I'd share a few...

3. Will and I got a cat for one of our wedding presents. He hated living in the house and quickly became a barn cat. His name is Lenny and he is now training our new cat Mr Norris how to kill mice. They leave me "presents" outside my door most days.

Monday: A week in review

Hi all!

I've been so crazy busy with work and tutoring I literally have had no time to post. I have however made time for exercise! Yay! Here is my week of exercise reviewed for you...

Mon- Spin Class
Tues-AM Weights (Arms), PM Spin Class
Wed- 1 hour walk
Thurs-Off day, had to get dental work done and my jaw was super sore all day :(
Fri- Spin class, 20 min treadmill intervals
Sat- Full body weights
Sun-10 mins recumbent bike, 45 min sprint/jog intervals on treadmill

I'm feeling pretty good about the amount of exercise I'm getting in. All of a sudden I'm obsessed with spin class- absolutely loving it! They just added another one at Wednesday at 6:30am at my gym, and the fact that I'm willing to drag my butt out of bed for that is saying something!
It feels strange to workout without a race to be training for, but right now I am kind of enjoying working out without a schedule.

In other news, it snowed here again! We actually have snow stuck to the ground now. If it doesn't melt in the next 2 days, I'm moving to Mexico permanently ( I will be there in 64 days regardless!)

 Here are my eats from today:

My current breakfast obsession- oatmeal with a chopped up apple, cinnamon, a splash of milk and a tiny bit of maple syrup. It's what I'm getting up for in the mornings lately!

Random lunch today- Small baked potato with light sour cream and green onions, and a taco salad with spring mix, veggie taco meat, corn and a few crushed tortilla chips- delish!
Snack time- I've been making an effort to get two full dairy servings in per day... what better way to have a glass of milk than to pair it with a black bean brownie (recipe from Chocolate Covered Katie). Sounds kind of gross, but oh my goodness! So yummy!!!

Dinner- Amy's Organic Cheese Pizza aaand....
...Veggies with hummus!

I didn't finish my celery so I ate it for dessert with some peanut butter!

Today all of my food pics were taken in the same place.. I didn't get called in to work today so other than tutoring for an hour I got to spend my day at home. It was much needed due to the intense spin class I took last night. Wowza, did it ever kick my butt! It's been a long time since I've been sore from spin, but I was definitely hurting today. We had a new instructor last night, and she's totally hardcore. I'm pretty sure even my eyeballs were sweating, although it could have been tears from how much my legs were burning!!

On the workout schedule tomorrow is an easy 5-8km run, and a spin class! I love the instructor that does the Thursday spin so I'm really looking forward to it!

Also, I'm totally behind on updating my pics from the October Photo a Day Challenge. Tomorrow I promise to get an update ready for you :)

New 10K PR!!!

Today I ran a 10K in Creston and I got an unexpected PR... by two and a half minutes!!

I got up this morning at 7:15, showered (I know, I know, who showers before a race?... This guy!), and ate an apple and a Toasted Cranberry and Nut Luna Bar. I got my stuff together, went and picked up my bestest best friend Kirsten, and went to my mother in law Lynn's house. Since the race was about an hour away we decided to carpool.

Lynn and Erika (sister in law) were ready to go when we got there so we were on our way. Fast forward to 9:30, we got to the wildlife center (the start of the race) and I was actually surprised by the number of people- lots more than the last time we ran it! We picked up our race packages then headed back to the van to get ready, and of course take a pre race photo!

I was a little nervous for this race. See, the truth is I'm extremely competitive. I like to pretend that I'm not, but I am. As we waited for the gun to go off, I was thinking about how many of the people in front of me I could pass :)

Aaaand we're off!

I spent the first kilometer running a little slower, probably around a 5:50/km pace. I was running just behind Kirsten, and Erika was just behind me. Lynn was back a bit from us. At this point I had an epiphany. I ALWAYS start my races off running slowly because I dont want to burn out. I started thinking about it, and thought this is a RACE, therefore I need to go HARD! So I sped up and matched my pace with Kirsten's for about 3km. There was a pack of about 8 people in front of us that were running a similar speed and I decided to pass them all.

It was one of those days where my body felt good, my music was just right and everything just seemed to be going great. I was thinking about Janae's blog The Hungry Runner Girl, her tagline is "It's rude to count people as you pass them. out loud." I started keeping a tally bacause it felt like I was passing a lot of people :) I pulled ahead of Kirsten just after the 3.5km mark and held about a 5:20-5:45 pace for the rest of the race.

For the last 2km I was running just behind a lady in a fancy tie dye outfit, and a lady who had really strong legs. I stayed with them until the last 800 meters when I decided to see if I could pull ahead, and I did easily. I finished the race about a minute fasted than my goal pace of 58:30. I'm not sure what my official time was because it hasn't been posted yet, but it was around 57:20.

When I finished I grabbed a banana and some water and waited for the rest of my "team" to come in. Kirsten was next at just over an hour, then Erika at 1:02, and Lynn at 1:06. Everyone was pretty happy with their times.

Once we were all stretched out, I was ready to go but Lynn and Erika wanted to stay for the medal presentations. Good thing we did becasue....

I got 2nd in my age group!!! I've never won a medal in my life (aside from a participation medal) and the look on my face when they called my name must have been pretty funny because when I went up to get my medal the lady couldn't stop laughing at me. Kirsten ended up getting 3rd in our age group (20-29) and she was really surprised as well.

It was the best race I've ever run, and I am definitely motivated to keep my training up over the winter.

Saturday morning catch up time!

Hi All!

It's been much too long! I need to get better at this blogging business.
Here are 5 quick updates on my life:

1.  I have been spinning 3 days a week and I LOVE it!! I've always been an occasional spinner, once every couple of weeks, but I'm finding myself obsessed. I went on Monday, Thursday and Friday this week. My gym is supposed to be getting new spin bikes this week, that should be awesome- the ones they have now are from a million years ago!

2.  I started Livefit with my friend Michelle who just moved home, and I'm awfully excited about it! I plan on sticking out the whole 12 weeks this time rather than just the first 2! Again, I am not following the no cardio recommendations for the first 4 weeks (I just cant live without my cardio!!) and I am not really following the diet plan. I eat semi clean, but I love my treats! We'll see, I may try to follow it more strictly later on in the plan. We did the first two days (arms, chest, back) and I am so super sore! It feels great though!

3.  I am running a 10K tomorrow! I say running instead of racing because I am so sore from Livefit, I don't foresee an amazing race. I am going with My friend Kirsten,my mother in law Lynn and my sister in law Erika. Look for a "Race Recap" post tomorrow!

4. I did my first ever hot yoga class today. It rocked! It was a hatha flow which was a nice and gentle way to stretch my poor sore muscles. It also showed me just how disgustingly tight my hamstrings are and how I need to start doing it at least once a week.

5. Number 5 and most exciting of all- I have convinced Will to take up running with me! We have gone twice this week and are planning to go again tomorrow night. I'm loving it so much, words can't even describe how excited I am!! It's my dream to have a running partner, especially one as cute as Will!

How I injured my shoulder

Hi all!

If you are following my blog you may periodically hear me refer to my shoulder injury. I'm sure you're just dying to know how it happened right?? Mkayy, so...
Me, my friend Paige and my friend Ali. Yes Paige is so tall that she is that much taller than us when we are on skates.

About 7 years ago I was playing hockey (ooohhhh hockey injury, so hardcore right?? Not so much). After the game (in which I scored 3 goals I might add), we headed into the change room. as I was taking my jersey off it got stuck. Instead of asking someone to help me, like a smart person would do, I decided to just reef on it and pulled it over my head.

When I pulled it I heard a ripping type noise. It didn't hurt badly, but it was sore for a long time. In fact it never became unsore. It was one of those nagging injuries that is annoying, but you dont really bother to do anything about. It only bothered me when I rotated my shoulder backwards and tried to lift my arm above my head. It would catch and pop if I tried to do either of those motions so I just ignored it (I was 17, give me a break!)

Two years after it happened it started to bother me more. I went to the orthopedic doctor and he ran tests on me for a year and a half trying to figure out what it was. I had an MRI, 3 CAT scans, freezing shot into different parts of my shoulder under an x-ray... I could go on and on. He didn't find anything and offered to do exploratory surgery. Surgery scares me, I had it once and I don't want it again unless it is absolutely necessary.

So I was referred to a shoulder specialist in Calgary. I went to him twice and it was completely useless. During my first visit he ordered another MRI before he could tell anything, so we drove home, got the MRI and waited another 3 months to get back in. During our second visit he couldn't find the MRI, and hadn't even looked at it yet! He finally found it and then basically told me that he didn't really know what the problem was and there was nothing that they could do about it besides going down somewhere in the States to get surgery that would be super expensive and possibly fix it for about 10 years. Umm no thanks!

He then proceeded to complain about his shoulder and how it is worse than mine. He finished the appointment by telling me that I needed to get into a regular exercise program to get into shape. Riiight. I was training for a triathlon at the time and working out 6 days a week. I was a little more than angry when I left.

Fast forward to 5 months ago. I had tried 3 different massage therapists as well as physiotherapy over the past couple years and I was feeling pretty defeated. I called to make an appointment with my current massage therapist and he wasn't available. I really needed it done, so I made an appointment with a different therapist.

He rocks my world!!! After one session with him, my shoulder was feeling better. After 4 months, I almost have my entire range of motion back. It hurts soooo bad while he is working on it, but afterwards it is so worth it.

I got my shoulder worked on yesterday, and it is still super sore today. Therefore my one mile was a run walk combo but I still got it done! Running streak day 4!

August foodie pen pal reveal!

Today marks the end of another month, and the end of summer vacation. Many people are saddened by the end of summer, but I am so ready for fall! I love fall weather, fall runs, fall food, fall clothes... I could go on forever!
The end of the month also means that it is time for the foodie pen pal reveal! For more info on the foodie pen pal program, check out the link at the bottom of this post!

I received my foodie pen pal package this month from Kerri, who is a blog reader. She is a mom of 3 girls from Alberta, Canada. She is doing her first triathlon in Banff this year, which I am considering doing, so it was cool that we got paired together! Kerri sent me an amazing package, take a look at the goodies that I got!

So excited to get my package in the mail!!

The first thing I saw was was this chocolate bar, and my heart was won!

Next was a bag of biscotti- the most amazing biscotti I have ever had! Kerri made it herself and it was delicious on its own, in tea, in coffee.. sooooo good!

Kerri spent sometime this summer working with her daughter at a bee ranch, and they sell their honey to BeeMaid! I just ran out of liquid honey and this was on my grocery list so this was perfect timing!

Mr Norris insisted on helping me unwrap my goodies!

Dried cherries- I love these in my oatmeal!! I can't wait until fall when its cool enough to eat oatmeal to enjoy them!

Blueberry Black tea picked out by Kerri's daughter. I have a huge tea collection and I love trying new kinds. This tea is awesome chilled!!
This daily health booster came with the tea. I haven't tried it yet, but I am excited to try!

The last thing I pulled out of the box was these RiceWorks chips. I've only ever tried the plain ones, and man have I been missing out!! These are so yummy and I am going to have to figure out where to buy them here!
