Race #1 of 13 in 2013 done!!
I am undecided on whether or not I had a good race. The luck of the Irish most definitely wasn't with me leading up to the race, that's for sure!
After my run on Monday, my right hamstring was feeling a wee bit tight. On Tuesday morning, it was burning. I foam rolled, I forced people to rub it, I heated it and it gradually felt a bit better. Still pretty tight when I woke up on race day though!
I'm dumb and did not pack for the Calgary weather. I didn't bring mitts or a warm jacket and that was not smart. The weather sucked on race day, the thermometer in my car read -13, and it was pretty darn windy out. I borrowed some mitts from my friend Ali, but I wish I owuld have layered up a little more than I did!
I went to start my car so it would be warm when we headed to the race. Somehow way back I managed to trip and fell flat on my face. I'm glad the step I landed on was short, otherwise my face would have been a mess. I caught myself kind of awkwardly with my elbows/forearms, which of course led to some shoulder pain. Faaantastic.
Before we left for Calgary I had a PR in my sight. By the time we left Ali's, I was just hoping to be able to finish without having to walk. I was crabby and sore, and my head wasn't in the game at all. I was secretly hoping that one of the girls would suggest not going!
We only had about 5 mins to spare once we got to the race so we headed outside to the start line and got ready to go. Ali, Kirsten and Michelle decided to walk it, so I was on my own. The first km sucked- my feet were frozen, and for some reason a ton of walkers decided that they should start at the front of the pack so I spent the first km dodging said walkers. The first km alone took me 8 min!
Once I got the feeling back in my toes, and I got past all of the slower people I started to relax and have fun. My leg was tight so I decided not to push it too hard, I was just aiming for sub 30:00.
I ended up finishing in 29:27,which I was happy with given the conditions! It was good for 4/51 in my age group, 11/171 women, and 32/227 overall.
I'm looking forward to my next 5k in April, I really want to improve my PR!
