Weekend Recap- Banff Trip!

I had the most amazing weekend with some of my very favorite people!

It was my friend Michelle's stagette, and we decided to celebrate by going to Banff and going camping! It was an excellent choice if I do say so myself.

On Friday we spent the day driving, then doing a little shopping in Banff before heading to the campground to get everything set up.

Kirsten, Michelle, Me, and Heather after successfully setting up our tent, and figuring out how to use the self timer on my camera!

Practicing scaring bears away!

Nice view on our walk
After we got everything set up, our other friends Nancy and Ali arrived and it was time to get ready to go out for dinner and some dancing. If you want people to give you funny looks, get ready to go out in a campground. And also, have a giant Texas Mickey of vodka on your picnic table. That got some looks too.

We went to a really great restaurant for dinner, I can't remember the name of it, I'll have to check with Michelle, but it was delish! I had a really good pizza with fresh basil and tomatoes.

After dinner we headed out to find a place to go dancing. We went to a club called Aurora first, but we quickly decided it wasn't for us and moved onto the next bar called The Dancing Sasquatch. It was much more our speed, and we stayed until closing time. Going to bars/clubs is not my thing AT ALL, I honestly can't remember the last time I went out.. its been at least 3 or 4 years. However, I had a great night! I got to be the DD and I still managed to dance and have some fun! Nobody got too crazy which was awesome since we had a big hike planned for Saturday!

We actually managed to sleep in until around 9:00 on Saturday morning, which was pretty good considering how bright it was. After breakfast we headed out for our hike. We decided to hike Johnson Canyon and the Ink Pots, which ended up being about a 13km round trip hike. The first 2.5 km are paved, and absolutely swarmed with people. Once the paved part ended there were a lot less people.

Having a snack at the ink pots

The views were pretty spectacular, and the ink pots were so cool! I have pictures of them but they really don't do them justice so I'm not going to bother posting them. Here are some waterfall pictures instead!

Saturday night we just hung out at the campground. We made chicken foil packets over the fire for dinner, followed by some s'mores of course!

Sunday morning we packed up and headed into Banff for breakfast. We went to Tooloulou's and it was awesome!! If you are ever in Banff I highly recommend it for breakfast. Their menu is huge, an they are happy to make any substitutions that you want. After breaky we wandered into a few more shops, grabbed an iced coffee, then headed home.

I had such an amazing time, I feel so lucky to have the best friends in the world! It was the perfect girls weekend and I can't wait to do it again!

How to really impress a potential employer

This is kind of a long story, but I promise you will get to laugh at me, so bear with me!

I have been getting really discouraged lately by the lack of jobs that are available in my school district. I've applied for what feel like hundreds with no luck. I decided to take a look at some different districts and see what they had available. There was a posting for a full time grade 1 position starting in September in Invermere, which is about an hour and 20 mins from Cranbrook. I decided to apply, just because.

Imagine my surprise when I actually got a call from the principal offering an interview! When he called I had just finished my final FGB workout for the paleo challenge and I was really excited. After I got off the phone with the principal I felt kind of stupid because I kept using words like "cool" and "awesome". Probably not the best way to impress possible future employers.

I left early on Wednesday since I knew there was come construction between Cranbrook and Inveremere. I gave myself an extra hour, and figured that would be sufficient to get me there about 10 minutes before the interview.... I underestimated. I pulled int the school parking lot with one minute to spare. Strike 2, Danielle. I quickly changed my shoes and headed inside.

I had an awesome interview. I felt like I answered all of the questions pretty well, although I felt like maybe I was a little too brutally honest about my weaknesses (I don't buy into picking a strength and making it seem like a weakness), the principal even laughed and said "wow, that was honest" a couple of times during the interview.

I headed outside after the interview was over, and I was feeling pretty good. I went to step into the car, looked at my feet, and this is what I saw:

Oh.My.Goodness! I just about died! I felt really stupid, and then I started to laugh like a lunatic. I wore the squishy green ones to drive in, and switched to the black ones once I got there... or so I thought! I must have been really nervous because those sandals feel really different from one another! The first 15 minutes of my drive home were spent cackling to myself, mostly so I didn't cry!

Once I got home I emailed the principal and told him I usually don't try to make fashion statements that are quite so bold. He emailed me back and told me he didn't notice, so then I felt even more stupid.I was pretty sure that my chance of getting the job was over.

At about 8:30 that night the phone rang, and wouldn't you know it... I got the job!!!! I was very surprised to say the least. He interviewed about 7 people (who probably wore matching footwear). I still can't believe I actually got it. I told Will that maybe I got it because the principal thinks I'm crazy and awesome like Miss Frizzle. Either way, I am so excited to have a class of my own! And the school sounds amazing, they're big into outdoor ed- they even had their whole kindergarten class out snowshoeing last year!

Since it's about an hour and a half drive, I am going to be staying up there during the week, and coming home on the weekends. Will's grandpa has a house on Columbia lake (which is about 15 minutes from the school)  and it is empty right now, so I'll be moving in at the end of August! To make things even better, it sounds like Will's work may be doing a job in Fairmont starting in September, so he might be staying there with me as well!

I was trying to think of a moral for this story, and I can't think of one.  If anyone else can come up with one you will win a virtual pat on the back from me!

Anyone else have an embarrassing interview story? Please tell me I'm not alone!!

Happy birthday to Canada (and me!)

I love long weekends!
Especially Canada Day long weekend.

My birthday + Fireworks= Happy Danielle! I'm pretty sure my parents had me convinced tat the fireworks were for me until I was old enough to wonder why all these people that I didn't know were at my birthday party!

We had a pretty chill weekend. On Friday I went to Fernie with my mom and sister for my cousin's grad. Before we went to Fernie, I went to crossfit to do my final measure-in (?) and Fight Gone Bad workout to finish off the Paleo challenge. I was super happy with the results of both and I promise I'll have a post up tomorrow with my results.

Saturday was great, Will and I hit the farmers market in the morning. We ended up getting eggs, pickled carrots, and a smokey honey garlic salsa (that was paleo, yay!) that I'm super excited to try out on chicken this week. We got to go for dinner with Will's brother and his fiancee, we went to Pedal and Tap in Kimberley and it was seriously amazing. If you are ever in the Cranbrook/Kimberley area, it is the place to eat!

I woke up on Sunday morning at 6:00, and I had the urge to go for a run, so I jumped right on that! I went out for a quick 5km with the dogs, and it felt great!!

We spent the rest of the day hanging out with Will's family, and going to his parent's place for his grandpa's 90th birthday dinner.

I woke up early on Monday and couldn't go back to sleep- did I mention I'm like a 5 year old when it comes to my birthday? I just love it!! When I finally got Will out of bed we went out for breakfast, then went for a quad ride with my parents. It was a gorgeous day, so we stopped at a creek for a quick cool off before riding home.
My Willy!

We had birthday dinner at my parents place with my family, Will's family, my gramma, my aunt and uncle, and a bunch of friends! Baby Eli was there too, so that was super exciting.

We ended the day by driving into town to watch the fireworks- a perfect ending to a perfect long weekend!!
I hope everyone had an amazing long weekend!!
